[SOLVED] About Fees (title renamed/shortened)
#1
EDIT: Solved.

Before I joined I was pretty impressed with this place. It looked like a great place to get free plugins for a piece of free forum software.

I checked the tagpad, unaware that you had to pay (?!) for plugins for a piece of free forum software. There were "FREE DOWNLOADS!" and things like that written on there - strange, I thought.

I then tried to access some of the plugins, and was astonished to find that I had to pay for plugins for a free piece of forum software. Regardless of the price, it's just not right.

Well, I know just because I said this you're not going to change your ways, but I just hope someone else creates the plugins which you have created and distributes them for free.

Have a good day,

-DC.

Edit:

Despite this, I think what you are offering for free is of a high quality nevertheless.
I still think that paying for plugins for a free piece of software isn't right.

Another person who just has to moan at someone's source of income.

If you don't want to pay, don't, no need for threads like this.

It's nice to know you respect other people's opinions Smile
I could pay the fee, in fact, I might do so. I am just saying it is wrong to sell plugins for a free piece of software. It's just not right.

But you know, I guess there will be a lot more comments like this Smile

Dude there are other places that offer free plugins. This isn't the only place. Quit complaining. Labrocca is one of the top donaters to the mybb project, and part of your subsciption goes back to mybb to help pay with their servers.

I think what people fail to see is that even though MyBB is free, doesn't mean everything for it has to be. To me, it's no different than paying someone to design a custom theme for you. If you look at PHPBB, SMF, and so on...which are all free, there are sites that offer premium themes and modifications that you have to pay for.
As Matt stated...if you don't want to, then don't. No one is forcing you.

It's not that I don't respect opinions, but I've heard it so many times before and I just get a bit sick of all the people moaning about the incredibly low fee. As bk2070 said, money goes back to MyBB, so you're not just paying labrocca, you're contributing to MyBB itself. This is a 3rd party site, nothing to do with the MyBB Group at all, so just because they release the software free doesn't mean things from 3rd party sites also need to be free.

I was willing to pay more than $5, so bought another subscription, because the plugins here have really enhanced my forum, and they're better than what's available on the MyBB forum itself.

Okay okay! I understand your opinions.
I was simply making an observation.

I know that you must feel strongly about this, but frankly if I cannot give my opinion there is no point of this feedback forum being here at all.

Fair point well made, so consider this to just be my opinion and feedback Smile

Let me give you a better reasoning.

Do you pay for hosting of your free MYBB? Do you pay for the domain? Did you pay for the internet access you have? Did you pay for the computer you are on? How about the electricity to turn the computer?

I am not Mybb. I am under no obligation to be a free software provider and Mybb has given it's blessing to my project.

Would you complain realistically to your host..."hey...mybb was free why do I have to pay to host it"?

The argument that since Mybb is free everything related must also be free is absurd.

You won't find that anywhere here. Even at the mybboard community site I have it in my signature that downloads here are for paid subscribers.
http://community.mybboard.net/user-2877.html

Quote:[Some plugins at Mybb Central are for paid subscribers only.]

And I now also place that on the top of all my plugin releases too. I am not here to mislead people. They won't pay by accident. I am not here to upset or tease people that can't or won't pay.

Mybb Central is my own personal independent site where I release my own work and offer support. The plugins created are made possible by the subscription fee. Otherwise I could not justify the time spent which is literally hundreds of hours. I am 38 with 4 kids. I can't do this as a hobby. I need a revenue stream no matter how small. The fee is $5 per year for downloads with a liberal usage license. I don't ask for links back. I don't require posts. I often help people install or fix problems for no fee. The $5 per member subscription I recieve is nominal in comparison to the effort I place into mybb daily.

Thank you.

RE the free downloads thing, on the tagpad, someone has typed something about free downloads, but Dan, labrocca has no real control over what is posted there, so that argument was a bit limp if I'm honest.
