Freenode pjirc Chat
#1
This is a pjirc chat software plugin for mybb that utilizes Freenode.net servers. This means you do not have to host the irc server nor the software. It runs the java applet from them. I based this off Michael83's pjirc plugin and I am releasing this with his permission.

License is GNU/GPL attached inside extras folder.

Plugin Name: Freenode PJIRC
Plugin Author: Jesse Labrocca
Plugin Website: http://www.MybbCentral.com
Plugin Version: 1.0
Plugin Mybb Compatibility: 1.2x
Plugin File Edits: None
Plugin File Uploads: 3

Installation

1. Upload the files from the zip

2. Login to your admincp and ACTIVATE the plugin in the plugin manager.

3. In admincp settings under Freenode PJIRC enter a channel name (can be anything you make up).

Great idea. Thanks so much. Smile

I do have an issue though. I get an error saying "you have to activate the plugin" even though the plugin is activated. I tried deleting this code from chat.php and it says "select a channel" even though I already named the chat room in the admin panel like it said in the readme.

how is this different from the original pjirc-plugin release long time ago?

This is different in that it's only 2 php files and 1 image. The old one had the complete pjirc package in it which was a couple dozen files. Also you had to figure out the pjirc server to use..a bit more complicated to set up while this is one is extremely easy. A complete idiot to irc could do it. In essence it's the same...just cleaner, leaner and updated.

It's a cool idea to provide this simple version, but as I posted earlier, this plugin is not working at all...

(And yes I've followed all of the instructions and I have properly activated the plugin and configured the settings including the chat room name in the control panel.)

What version of mybb are you on?

Let me double check the plugin...I made some last minute changes and maybe I goofed.

EDIT: I just did a fresh install at another site...zero problems. Do you have java enabled on your computer? Can I get a link to your site?

Wow, Labrocca! Now, I have to admit, you've impressed me! Do you know how many times I've looked for a chat that didn't require being hosted with someone else? This is really cool!!! Bravo!!

Question though! How do we know what passwords are and such. I tried to change my nickname and it wanted me to identify myself with the admin password! Where would I specify something like that?

sorry..I am a bit of an IRC noob. If I can help you I will but currently I am busting out myps 1.09. It just so happened that the finalfantasyforum site wanted IRC and I didn't really like how the old one worked. So I redid it and released it.

oh cool....didn't know that....I installed pjirc myself and it worked fine....forgot it was that many files Smile

as far as the question about nicknames and passwords on the irc, I can answer some of it..

- you have to remember that even if the chat is integrated with MyBB, it only takes care of your connection to the server and to the assigned room....after that you're on your own
- so basically if you wish to change your username on the IRC-server, you have to do it with the IRC-server and it won't change anything at the MyBB-forums.... (just in case someone doesn't know, you'd do something like /nick *Newnick*...(I am not sure about that one)
- there are also million different ways to then further configure the channel etc. I'd recommend looking up stuff about NickServ and Chanserv

http://www.romikmil.com/nickserv.htm
http://www.romikmil.com/chanserv.htm

although you have to be ready to do a bit of reading before you understand the command-structures etc.

Some channels even allow bots in the rooms to do a bit of housekeeping...automatic throwing/banning of flooders, channel protection (prevent people from hijacking the room) etc etc

Bottomline here is that once you're in the room (coming in from this pjirc-client on the forum), it has nothing to do with the forum anymore....you change your nick there or password...it will only change in the IRC-server and won't effect anything in the forums...

cheers,
Kimmo

Hmmmm....thanks for the info, Kimmo! I guess it's just better not to change your nick once you're in the chat! LOL Wink
