How many queries are too many?
#1
I was just wondering how many queries a normal page should have. I mean, I realize a lot of SQL queries can slow down a forum or cause MySQL crashes. So, how many is too many? At the moment, on my site, it takes 40 SQL queries for the index page, and 22/23 when loading forum sections and threads. Is this too many?

Also, if MattR can see them, or Labrocca sees this, could you answer me, how many queries are sent when loading pages on this site?

I can't see that stuff here, I'm only a mod.

On my forum I had 100 queries on the index, I'd loaded it up with plugins, mainly to test, and it still loaded in 0.1x seconds all the time, and that was on a shared host. Lots of queries isn't necessarily a bad thing if they're small and/or optimised. If the MySQL value in the footer is 30% or under I wouldn't worry about it. If you click the Advanced Details you can see each query and see how long each one took, see what the longest one to load is.

HF index page = 12 queries
HF showthread = 26 queries

Is this the value you mean?;

Generated in 0.2016530 seconds (42.22% PHP / 57.78% MySQL)
SQL Queries: 40 / Global Parsing Time: 0.0661120 / Memory Usage: 7.25 MB

That's loading the index page. I can't tell if it's slower that before or w/e, as my site is getting quite a few crippling 3gbps DDoS attacks of late.

Woah, 7.25 MB?? Hmm, I smell overselling on your server.

You mean 3mbps because no one would be sending you 3gpbs. Even HF doesn't get attacks of that magnitude. A 3gpbs wouldn't even registere as most hosts are on a 100mbps or 1gbps pipe.

All you "hacker/warez" wannabe forums on cheap hosts just get eaten alive by DDOS attacks and your hosts suspend you quick. Get a reliable dedicated server. You're just attracting people to attack you if you're small.

Host won't suspend me for the DDoS attacks lol, the host is what they're directed at. My host has some haters haha.

If I had the cash, and a "instant" paypal (CC attached), I would get myself a dedi server. Problem is, they are hard to find when you want to link to warez. When you do find one, they are cripplingly expensive. I would like nothing better than a good dedi server, but I'm not in a position to be able to afford one with a TOS that fits my needs.

Also, just because there are other warez sites out there, does not make my site a "wannabe" forum. When warez-bb was made, there was shitloads of other warez forums. Now, it has 1.6 million members and growing. When HF was started, there were plenty of hacking sites, but now it is the first in line with 124k members, and growing everyday. HF was "just another shitty site" back in the day. Now look at it.

Run by someone with experience and ability to execute though. I have a feeling warez-bb has the same knowledgable admin. Successful sites are all based solidly on a strong admin.

You don't seem to have the resources available to execute this. I myself spend about $10,000 or more per year in expenses for my sites and this was even before HF.

Everyone starts somewhere. Plus, take a look at the admin of PSPISO.com. TinTin started out just the same as me. Now he has a shitload of *iso.com websites haha. Once I can afford it, I will be getting a dedi server. I am learning more and more about protecting websites day by day. I've been fiddling with almost everything on my site, just to see what I can do. So who knows how good my site is gonna be, 5 years from now?
